If a contractor is licensed, he has legitimate claim to be a professional in his industry. He won’t leave aside even a small thing when it comes to a home renovation project while an unlicensed contractor cannot give you the same assurance. If a contractor holds a license, it proves that his team met established State standards to acquire the license and a team headed by him also maintains those standards to uphold the license. Hiring an unlicensed contractor, you are assuming serious risks of getting sloppily done job resulting in legal and financial consequences. In addition, if the work is not in compliance with the proper local building codes and your unlicensed contractor did not present the proper work permits, you may risk to get costly Building Code violation fines, and, in some cases, your homeowner’s insurance policy may be voided if a claim arises as a result of the work done by an unlicensed contractor. Unlicensed contractors usually offer much lower estimation for projects.
